Anna had always been a spontaneous traveler. So, when she impulsively booked a trip to Easter Island, she skimmed a travel vlog that listed ten essential tips—but figured she’d be fine without following them. After all, how bad could it be?
The trouble began before she even landed.
Tip 9: Be prepared for lots of travel and no Wi-Fi on the plane.
Anna assumed the plane ride would be short and loaded her tablet with online games instead of downloading movies. Hours into the flight, her entertainment died, leaving her bored and restless.
When she finally arrived, Anna stepped off the plane and basked in the tropical sun.
Tip 1: Wear lots of sunscreen.
“I’ll be fine,” she thought, tossing her SPF bottle back in her bag. After all, she had a hat! Unfortunately, her hat blew off ten minutes later, and by the end of her first day, her face was lobster-red.
The next day, Anna set off to explore the famous Moai statues.
Tip 2: Be prepared for lots of walking.
“Eh, it can’t be that far,” she muttered, wearing flimsy sandals instead of proper shoes. Hours later, her feet throbbed, her ankles ached, and blisters bloomed on her heels.
Tip 6: Wear comfortable walking shoes and outfits for hiking.
Anna’s lightweight sundress fluttered in the wind while she stumbled over uneven stone paths. Scratches decorated her legs, and she winced with every step.
Determined to salvage her trip, Anna decided to take pictures of the Moai statues.
Tip 4: Bring a digital camera.
“I’ll just use my phone,” she shrugged. Unfortunately, her phone battery was nearly dead—and there was no charger in sight.
Tip 3: Be prepared for limited Wi-Fi.
“I’ll just find some Wi-Fi,” she muttered. Spoiler alert: there wasn’t any. With no GPS, she wandered aimlessly, adding even more mileage to her already aching feet.
Frustrated, Anna sought comfort at Pea Beach.
Tip 5: Enjoy the nature at Pea Beach.
“I don’t need a beach,” she scoffed, still too annoyed to relax. Instead of calming ocean views, she sulked in her hotel room—where she found exactly one TV channel playing a static-filled soap opera.
Hungry and exhausted, she finally ventured out for food.
Tip 8: Enjoy the food, try lots of things.
“I’ll stick to what I know,” she grumbled, ignoring the island’s fresh seafood and unique flavors. Instead, she grabbed a lukewarm prepackaged sandwich from a nearby shop. It was stale.
By her final day, Anna sat alone in the airport, sunburned, blistered, and starving. As she rubbed aloe on her peeling skin and scrolled through her nearly empty photo gallery, she sighed.
Tip 7: Take pictures of everything.
“Well… at least there’s this one blurry shot of a Moai,” she muttered.
Despite her miserable adventure, Anna laughed. Next time, she promised herself, she’d listen to the tips.
Tip 10: Enjoy your trip!
Maybe she hadn’t followed the tips—but she’d learned the hard way why they mattered. And hey, that had to count for something.
